Goals of the department NUM:
Our main research activities center on the study of solid, liquid or soft condensed
matter, using state of the art instruments at the continuous Spallation Neutron Source
SINQ (operated by the spallation source division
ASQ) and the continuous muon source
SµS. These
facilities run by the Laboratories for Neutron Scattering LNS
and Muon Spectroscopy LMU are also used by hundreds of
visiting scientists from universities and industry worldwide and experiments range from basic studies of magnetism
to the study of new materials. The annual flux of international scientists working with high quality facilities
creates a lively and productive research atmosphere. Technical and IT support is provided by the
Laboratory for Development and Methods LDM.
Another activity which joined the department in summer 2009 is the research on particle physics conducted
by the Laboratory for Particle Physics
LTP.
The department is also responsible for operating SINQ, for the development of instrumentation
at SINQ and SµS and for the testing of materials and target technologies for proton accelerator driven systems.
Furthermore the department includes the Condensed Matter Theory Group (
CMT)
and the PSI
User Office.
